Use Your Voice with Confidence – and Speak without Anxiety!
Dear Friend, Does the scenario below sound painfully familiar to you? You’re about to make a big presentation to a roomful of important people. You’ve toiled for weeks on this project, investing countless hours in researching, assembling facts and crafting stunning supporting visuals. Your message is on-point, your arguments are compelling, and you’re feeling confident it will be a “slam-dunk.” All the work you’ve done…those early mornings and long, caffeine-fueled nights…have led up to this very moment-a defining moment in your career.
But then, the unthinkable happens.
As you introduce yourself to the group, you become acutely aware that all eyes are on you. Your heart starts to pound as the room grows deafeningly silent. Suddenly it occurs to you: “What if this presentation is a total disaster? What if I humiliate myself?” You begin to feel anxious, and your voice starts to tremble a bit. So you talk faster to try to cover it up. Eventually, you are talking so fast that you’re virtually tripping over your words-even stuttering occasionally. And sometimes it feels as if each syllable is stuck in your throat. The temperature in the conference room seems to be climbing now, and you feel beads of perspiration forming on your brow. You can’t help but notice that one of your audience members is frowning, and another is looking at her watch. Have you lost them already? Your confidence plummets even further. By some miracle, you manage to finish your speech. But the audience reception is lukewarm at best, and the tension in the room is almost palpable as the lights come up. You feel betrayed by your own speaking voice, which did a true injustice to all of the blood, sweat and tears you poured into preparing for your presentation. Instead of coming across as a confident and commanding professional like you had planned, you appeared nervous, insecure and amateurish. As you watch the golden gates of opportunity slam shut, you realize that your worst fear has come true: your presentation was an utter failure. Whether you’re a CEO, a salesperson, an educator or a politician, chances are you’ve been in a situation very similar to the one described above. And if you have, take heart, because you’re not alone. After all…
The Fear of Public Speaking Tops the List of Human Fears
The fear of public speaking (also known as glossophobia) is one of the most common fears reported today. Even the most intelligent, educated and career-driven people experience some of the following symptoms when speaking to large groups:
- Increased heart rate
- Shaky hands and voice
- Shortness of breath
- Sweaty palms
- Racing, disorganized thoughts
- Talking fast
- Forgetting what you had to say
- Stammering and stuttering
- Lump in throat
- Sleeplessness the night before a presentation or speech
The bad news is that if you’re a professional who is required to communicate with the public, clients, co-workers or other large groups on a regular basis, performance anxiety can be overwhelming-even debilitating. In the short term, this anxiety has a negative impact on your performance during live presentations. Fear causes your physical movements to appear stiff and unnatural and makes your breathing labored. It hinders your ability to engage your audience, who will recognize and share your stress. Fear can also diminish your credibility by preventing you from delivering your message in a confident, authoritative manner. In the long term, a fear of public speaking can actually compromise the quality of your work, obstruct your career path, and prevent you from going where you want to go in life. It’s a serious problem that can’t be ignored.
But Here’s the Good News…
There are simple steps you can take to keep worry and tension at bay when speaking in public. I should know-because helping people become more effective speakers is my life’s work. My name is Klaus Møller, and for more than 20 years, I’ve helped business leaders, politicians, and entertainers harness the power of their voice to advance their professional careers. Today I am recognized as one of the leading voice teachers in Denmark and Northern Europe, where I provide one-on-one training, give lectures, and serve as a vocal coach to the New Theatre and The Royal Theatre in Copenhagen (I even worked with cast members ofPhantom of the Opera, Cats and Beauty and the Beast). When people sound good and feel more confident in their voice, they are free to engage with others more productively, whether it’s clients, prospects or a theatre audience. My specialty-and my passion-is training voices to sound better, feel better and communicate better. I work with my clients to design programs that create change in a very short period of time, addressing a variety of voice problems such as an unpleasant pitch or tone, or speaking too softly, loudly, or fast. I also help people tame their public speaking fears-and break free from the anxiety that keeps them from communicating as they want to be heard. Over the years, I’ve developed simple breathing and vocal exercises designed to help my clients overcome nervousness and unleash the powerful, confident speaker that lies within. And now, for the first time, I’ve decided to share my “voice secrets” with the world – in a concise, easy-to-follow guide that’s now available to you!
